Super jeep tours
Midgard has been running super jeep tours for years
This is Midgard’s signature. Their super jeeps are modified 4x4s with 38 to 50 inch tires and snorkels for river crossings, so they can reach places a rental car simply can’t.
The Þórsmörk Super Jeep Day Tour is their most popular tour and has been since day one. It runs all year, takes 6 to 8 hours, and heads into a valley ringed by three glaciers, with river crossings and short hikes along the way. If you’re visiting in winter, this is your highland option. There’s also a longer version (10 to 12 hours) with pick-up straight from Reykjavik.
In summer, two more open up. Landmannalaugar (8 to 9 hours, June to September) is the famous rhyolite mountains and a natural hot spring to soak in. The Fjallabak tour goes deepest into the wild, black-sand deserts and green mossy peaks, usually with barely another traveler in sight.

Hiking tours
Midgard’s hiking tours are small-group with fantastic guides
Midgard’s guided hikes range from a relaxed day out to a proper leg-burner.
The Þórsmörk Hike Day Tour (May to October, 7 to 8 hours) is the easy pick. The hike itself is around 8 to 10 km over 3 to 4 hours, doable for anyone with a moderate fitness level, and you still get the super jeep ride in to reach the trailhead.
The Fimmvörðuháls Hike is the serious one. It’s a 24 km trail from Skógar over to Þórsmörk, 8 to 12 hours of walking, past the craters formed in the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption. Come fit for this one. Both hikes have a minimum age of 13.

Midgard’s aurora offering is a full package, not a quick evening chase. The 4-Day All-Inclusive Northern Lights Adventure runs from October to April and covers 4 days and 3 nights, with pick-up and drop-off in Reykjavik.
It rolls a lot into one trip: Katla ice caves, a Þórsmörk super jeep day, a glacier walk on Sólheimajökull, the Golden Circle, all your meals at Midgard Restaurant, and nights at Base Camp with the rooftop hot tub. Every evening the team scouts the aurora, and if the forecast looks better an hour away, they’ll drive you out to chase it.
Being in Hvolsvöllur helps here. There’s very little light pollution compared to the city, so the odds of a clear show are simply better. What guests bring up again and again: guides who grew up in the area and know it inside out, the small group sizes, and how flexible the team is when weather forces a change of plan. The river crossings and the hidden spots “off any map” get a lot of love too.

Our experience with Midgard Adventure
The super jeep day into Þórsmörk is the standout for us. Crossing glacial rivers in a huge 4×4 super jeep never stops being fun, and the guide pulled off the “main” route to show us a canyon and a waterfall we’d never have found on our own. We even spotted an Arctic fox, which apparently happens more than you’d think out there.
The hikes are paced for the group, not the fittest person in it. On the shorter Þórsmörk walk nobody feels rushed, and there is always the option to hang back near the jeep if you wanted. It’s a good setup if you’re traveling with mixed ages or fitness levels.
Our experience with Midgard has never been different from phenomenal
Base Camp genuinely surprised us. It calls itself a hostel, but the rooms are clean and modern, and the rooftop hot tub after a long day out is hard to beat. The food deserves a shout too. The crispy potatoes get talked about for a reason, and the lamb tasted like a proper Icelandic Sunday dinner.
