During our winter trip we had a chance to stay at some really nice and budget friendly places. We picked 6 of them we liked the most and would like to share them with you. Without further words, here they are.
1. Strýta Apartments, Hveragerði
Strýta Apartments in summerOne of our best stays in Iceland! Beautiful cottage, great owner, good location, good price. A beautiful cabin with nice views over peaceful countryside. Very well located close to ring road. Krissa was really kind to us, served all our requests and replied almost immediately to all of our questions. Very rare in Iceland! We had to come really late because of our flight delay, and she waited for us with no issues. You can book stay in Strýta apartments here.
The road to accommodation was well accessible even in winter, owners maintain the road themselves, several times a day. The cabin was pleasantly warm inside and as a bonus it smelled so good with some neat scent! My wife just loved the great scent that welcomed us on arrival in the cottage 🙂 On the next day we’ve done a hike to Reykjadalur hot river, which was only a few minutes’ drive away from Stryta cottage. Can’t think of any negative. We would definitely come back again!
2. Hotel Fljótshlíð, Hvolsvöllur
A great hotel in a lovely countryside with yummy local-farm food for a great value! We experienced an amazingly beautiful sunset in front of the hotel! Rooms are comfortable and warm with a nice distant view over peaceful Icelandic countryside. The staff was very nice, attentive and communicative (this is not often the case in Iceland!).

They serve many fresh and local meals in restaurant, directly from their farm, such as lamb, beef or even their own skyr! The road to accommodation was well accessible even in winter, it’s being maintained regularly. As a bonus, it’s also a green hotel with strong commitment to improving our planet. Would definitely come back again!
3. Adventure Hotel Geirland, Kirkjubæjarklaustur
Very friendly and affordable hotel in a beautiful quiet surroundings, ideally located just next to Kirkjubaerklaustur! The staff was one of the best we’ve met in Iceland – friendly, helpful and with a sense of humour. Rooms are spacious, await you pleasantly warm and there’s everything you may possibly need, with some complimentary tea and coffee as well.

Hotel is also a perfect spot to observe northern lights at! Because it’s not directly in the town and it’s rather secluded right next to a picturesque hill. Oh, and you can also have a nice dinner with affordable local food in their restaurant. We would definitely come back again.
4. Milk Factory Guesthouse, Höfn
A beautiful, completely newly renovated guesthouse with spacious rooms and great breakfast! We liked the most that everything was totally new and the staff was really trying hard to give us the most pleasant experience possible. We’ve searched for all hotels in Hofn and Milk Factory has won it and we were not disappointed!

Guesthouse is easy to find and there’s also a hotel-like reception that answered all our questions. A great bonus is a huge common room where breakfast is being served. All day long you can serve yourself with free coffee, hot chocolate or tea. There’s no common kitchen, but there are restaurants pretty close by and also a fast-food gas station.
We also got a really big room, probably the biggest we’d had in Iceland. Overall, a very pleasant stay and would definitely come back again!
5. Hotel Sel, Mývatn
Without doubt the best affordable hotel we’ve been to in Iceland! Amazing services, breakfast and location. There is a free private hot tube! Free high-quality coffee machine. Free northern lights wake up service. Free billiard table. The breakfast was absolutely number one out of all our Icelandic stays – huge variety of tasty and fresh meals!
You can book stay in Hotel Sel here.
Hotel is located right next to the lake Mývatn, that makes it a great starting place for the exploration of entire Mývatn area. We had a beautiful room with big windows and a view right at the lake Mývatn! Moreover, the staff was really friendly and sincerely tried to fulfil all our wishes and answer all our questions. We asked about one particular place in Husavik and a receptionist even offered us to call her friend in Husavik and ask her about that!
Sel hotel was one of the highlights of our winter stays in Iceland. It definitely exceeded our expectations and we would surely come back again!
6. Lighthouse Inn, Gardur
Staying near the airport? Our favorite choice! Lighthouse Inn has this great, remote, Icelandic atmosphere and all this just a 15-minute drive from the airport. You will get a beautiful room with a private bathroom for a really affordable price. The best about the stay was the location, however. The hotel is situated right next to the ocean and to the picturesque lighthouse. It’s also located far enough from the nearby cities, making it a great spot to observe northern lights at!

There’s a 24/7 reception (which is not often the case in Iceland!) with a nice and helpful staff. Parking is easy to reach even in winter and right next to the entrance. The breakfast buffet runs from around 7:15 already, which is also pretty convenient if you have an early flight. Oh yes, and the breakfast was great, with lots of meal variety (which is also not always the case in Iceland!). Would definitely come back again, and for longer, not just one night.
