Katla ice cave tours
Katla ice cave tour by Gravel Travel
The Vik to Katla Ice Cave tour is their flagship. You meet behind the Icewear store in Vík, ride about 45 minutes up to the glacier, put on a helmet and crampons, and spend around an hour at the cave.
It’s rated easy, but you should be able to walk 2 km on uneven ground and climb a steep bit with a rope. Not the best pick if you’re claustrophobic.

Highlands super jeep tours
Gravel Travel specializes in Highlands super jeep tours
This is where the “gravel” in Gravel Travel makes the most sense. The Landmannalaugar Super Jeep tour drives past Hekla volcano, the turquoise Frostastaðavatn lake, the blue Hnausapollur crater and the Valley of Tears (Sigöldugljúfur), then back via Háifoss and Gjáin.

Other highland options include a Kerlingarfjöll hiking day (see our Kerlingarfjöll guide), a private Þakgil canyon trip from Vík and a private Þórsmörk valley day. Highland roads usually open only in summer, roughly from late June to September.
Northern lights tours
We’ve heard only great feedback also on Gravel Travel northern lights tours
The Northern Lights Hunt goes out in a super jeep with a photographer, and you get free photos of yourself under the aurora within about a week. Hot cocoa, Icelandic pastries, blankets and an entry ticket to the Aurora Reykjavik Northern Lights Centre are all included.

What guests mention most: friendly local guides who never rush you, the super jeep ride itself, and the Katla cave with its mix of blue and black ash ice.
The negative reviews are worth reading too. A few people felt the northern lights tour went out on nights with weak activity (it’s their lowest-rated tour at 4.2). Some expected the big, famous Katla tunnel and got a smaller cave. And a couple of guests were moved to a partner operator without warning – the terms allow this when fewer than 4 people book a tour.
Our experience with Gravel Travel
We’ve done the ice cave and highland trips, and friends of ours went aurora hunting with them. Here’s what we believe is most important:
The ride is half the fun. The jeep climbed over gravel and ash where we’d never take our own car. And we drive F-roads quite a lot, so that says something 🙂
The ice cave is small but special. It’s smaller than the famous Katla tunnel photos you see online, so adjust your expectations. The black ash layers in the blue ice look unreal, though, and with only our group inside we had time for photos without strangers in every shot.
Guides who take their time. Our guides explained the geology, pointed out filming locations, and never rushed us back into the truck.
We’ve tried several Gravel Travel tours and loved them all
Landmannalaugar is a long day. 11 hours flies by, and the 3 hours in Landmannalaugar went too fast for us. The hot spring is a must, so bring a towel.
Northern lights, warm hands. It gets really cold out there, and hot chocolate tastes twice as good at minus 5. The photographer’s shots were much better than anything our phones managed.
One tip: arrive early at the meeting point to grab the front seats. Best view in the truck.

What is Gravel Travel’s cancellation policy?
Day tours can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before departure (a 3% processing fee may apply). Private tours need 48 hours, multi-day tours 72 hours, and Katla Geopark science tours 14 days. If Gravel Travel cancels because of weather, you can pick another tour or get a full refund.
What if we don’t see the northern lights?
Your booking stays valid for another northern lights tour for free. If the tour doesn’t run at all during your stay, you get a full refund.
What is the minimum age for Gravel Travel tours?
Most tours, including the Katla ice cave and northern lights, start at 8 years old. Katla Geopark science tours start at 10. Children under 135 cm need a car seat, which you have to bring yourself.
Where does Gravel Travel pick you up?
